BiBu – Mobile Film Education for Inclusion

- Summary
- Fact Sheet
- Project Details
BiBu is a mobile educational initiative using filmmaking with Sinti and Roma youth to share migration experiences. It promotes inclusion, intercultural dialogue, and self-expression through participatory media production.
Challenge
The project addresses the marginalisation of Sinti and Roma communities in Gelsenkirchen, focusing on SDG 4 (Quality Education) and SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities) through inclusive, accessible learning methods.
Target Groups:
Direct: Sinti and Roma youth and families.
Indirect: Social workers, local educators, and the wider public who engage with the resulting films and project outcomes.
Solution
BiBu provides outreach education via a mobile film unit, enabling youth to create short films about their lives. This fosters empathy, reduces prejudice, and strengthens social cohesion through shared narratives.
Innovation
The project uniquely combines creative media work, mobile outreach, and psychosocial support. It uses film as a tool for empowerment, education, and social integration in a marginalised community.
Impact
Participants gained confidence, voice, and public recognition. The wider community became more aware of the realities and potential of the Roma population. The model is transferable to other contexts and regions.
